In 1996 Okami was started by Mary DeMartinis and Laura McKee, devout sushi lovers who had a successful studio catering company. They had the idea to make sushi more readily available to the consumer and to provide the first fresh tasting sushi with extended shelf life. This evolved through years of research developing a proprietary method of preparation.
They started off making rolls by hand in a borrowed space. To finance the operation, they maxed out their credit cards, confident that the investment would pay off.
They first introduced Okami California Rolls at the different Farmer’s Market’s throughout the greater Los Angeles area. The popularity began to grow at an outstanding rate.
As the company continued to grow, it became apparent they needed a faster and more efficient way of making the sushi. After meeting with engineers in Japan, a high-speed proprietary sushi processing machine, "The Robot", was deveoped specifically for Okami. Okami was now able to produce close to 20,000 packs per day. Okami’s sushi professionals work side by side throughout every stage of the process, constantly monitoring the quality of the sushi. This has contributed to the reputation of Okami offering delicious, high quality and visually appealing California Rolls.
Only the finest and freshest ingredients are used with most being brought in daily to assure freshness. Every product is put together by trained sushi professionals, giving Okami California Rolls the look of being hand rolled.
